Hoonjae Kim

Hoonjae is a director on Grant Thornton (Cayman) LLP’s US/Bermuda Tax team. He is a qualified tax accountant with over 27 years of experience in US tax reporting and advisory services. He leads Grant Thornton's (Cayman) insurance tax practice.

Hoonjae is a highly experienced ASC 740 and income tax compliance expert with significant expertise in processes, controls, and non-routine tax planning strategies and transactions. He excels in high-pressure situations such as business combinations, remediation of material weaknesses across multiple jurisdictions, and managing income tax provisions. His experience also includes carve-out financials and compliance for significant and complex restructuring transactions, including GAAP deconsolidations and IPOs.

Industry experience

Hoonjae joined Grant Thornton in July 2024 after gaining valuable industry-specific experience with US multinational insurance operations, supporting all aspects of tax reporting for P&C and Life/Retirement business segments. During his time in industry, he managed US tax compliance and reporting for Life and non-Life insurance companies, including controlled foreign corporations and §953(d) entities.

He has extensive experience in tax accounting and reporting under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for companies of all sizes. He also managed tax due diligence and regulatory reporting reviews on insurance business combinations.

Hoonjae earned his Certified Public Accountant qualification in New Jersey in August 2000. Since then, he has worked in the insurance sector, both in professional practice and industry, for over 19 years.

He completed his MS in Taxation and BS in Accounting, and gained significant US corporate taxation experience at large accounting firms and multinational US corporations.
